Customer Downloads Recently various erroneous website postings have appeared which contain misinformation about Autronic products. These postings include an AVI video clip claiming to be a recording of timing jitter on an Autronic SM4 Ignition Output. This video purports to be of an oscilloscope screen depicting a single trace waveform that is a pulse of fixed duration. The “jumping” that is clearly evident is entirely due to the oscilloscope miss-triggering on this waveform. That miss-triggering is occurring within the oscilloscope, and its most probable cause is incorrect or incompetent adjustment of the oscilloscope controls. Another posting depicts what purports to be SM4 ignition timing errors during engine acceleration and deceleration. This video clip actually shows a well know brand digital dial back timing light being used in a manner that inevitably will produce erroneous timing readings. Posted with this clip is a commentary that incorrectly attributes this observed behavior to the Autronic ECU. The manufacturers of the timing light warn in their operating instructions that erroneous readings dependent upon the dial back angle selected are to be expected from this instrument when engine RPM is not steady. Please click on link to view our tests that demonstrate the behaviour of the same brand and model timing light. These tests were conducted on a V6 engine installation comprising an Autronic ECU, accurate 3 pulse/rev crank trigger and a single spark CDI configured for wasted spark. The ignition timing was locked to a fixed value, no ECU settings were changed during these tests. Wide Open Throttle no load accelerations were from 850 to approx 4000 RPM. White timing marks are 10 degrees apart. Take note that negligible error is evident when the dial back is set to 0 degrees, confirming accurate Autronic ECU operation on this installation. When the timing light dial back is changed to 20 (10 degrees actual because of waste spark ignition) over 10 degrees of variation is seen. This 20 dial back has been found to always cause this timing light to display fictitious timing fluctuations during RPM change. This behavior is as predicted in the instruction manual for the timing light and is well known throughout the industry. These website postings purporting to reflect Autronic ECU operation are seriously inaccurate, technically wrong and mischievous. Anyone who is sufficiently skilled will immediately recognize these misleading videos for what they really are. Action is being taken to correct this misinformation. Technical enquiries concerning this issue should be directed to Autronic via our contact form.
